The Story and Spiritual Significance of Kuber Dev

The worship of Kuber Dev is practiced for devotion, wise understanding, and inner stability.

The Story of Kuber Dev

Kuber Dev, also known as Dhanadhyaksha (Treasurer of Wealth), Dhanapati (Lord of Wealth), Yaksharaja (King of the Yakshas), Vaishravana, and the Guardian of the North, is revered in Hinduism as the presiding deity of wealth, prosperity, treasures, abundance, and material prosperity. He is considered the treasurer of the gods and the protector of all divine riches. Devotees worship him for financial growth, success in business, economic stability, and a prosperous life.
According to the Puranas, Kuber Dev was the son of Sage Vishrava. His mother was Ilavila. For this reason, he is also known as Vaishravana. He is regarded as the half-brother of Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Vibhishana, whose mother was Kaikesi.
In his youth, Kuber Dev performed intense penance to please Lord Brahma. Pleased by his severe austerities and devotion, Brahma granted him invaluable boons. He appointed Kuber Dev as the treasurer of all the gods and entrusted him with the responsibility of protecting all the wealth and treasures of the world.
Lord Brahma also gifted Kuber Dev the divine Pushpaka Vimana, through which he could travel anywhere at will. In addition, he was made the ruler of the golden city of Lanka, which at that time was an unparalleled center of prosperity, splendor, and divine opulence.
After some time, Ravana performed severe penance and acquired immense powers. Under the influence of pride and strength, he seized control of Lanka and expelled his half-brother Kuber Dev from the kingdom. He also took possession of the Pushpaka Vimana.
Although Kuber Dev was forced to leave Lanka, he did not abandon the path of patience and righteousness. Later, he established his residence in the divine city of Alakapuri near the Himalayas. Alakapuri is described as a magnificent and prosperous city comparable to heaven itself.
The Puranas describe a special friendship between Lord Shiva and Kuber Dev. Kuber Dev was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. Pleased with his devotion, Shiva made him the eternal guardian of wealth and treasures. Alakapuri, situated near Mount Kailash, is considered a symbol of this sacred relationship.
According to a famous story, Kuber Dev once became excessively proud of his wealth and grandeur. He invited Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati to a lavish feast in his palace. Understanding Kuber Dev's pride, Lord Shiva sent his son Lord Ganesha in their place.
Lord Ganesha began eating and quickly consumed all the food that had been prepared. Even then, his hunger was not satisfied. He started eating objects from the palace itself. At that point, Kuber Dev realized his mistake and sought forgiveness from Lord Shiva. This incident taught him that humility and devotion are greater than wealth.
Kuber Dev is also known as the King of the Yakshas. He is not only the lord of wealth but also a symbol of its proper use, protection, and responsible management. He teaches that wealth becomes truly beneficial only when it is used for righteousness, service, and the welfare of others.
