Later, Mitra and Varuna say that Nandi has little time to live. Seeing his father’s grief, Nandi turns to meditation and the Rudra mantra. Shiva appears with Uma and reassures him that he need not fear death. He makes Nandi chief of his attendants and grants him a lasting place at his side.
