The Story and Spiritual Significance of Shani Dev

Shani Dev is worshipped in Hinduism as the God of justice and the giver of karmic results. He is the son of Surya Dev (the Sun God) and Goddess Chhaya. The very name of Shani Dev evokes both fear and reverence in people’s hearts because he rewards or punishes individuals according to their actions. Shani Dev was born to Chhaya. It is said that while Shani Dev was still in his mother’s womb, she performed severe penance and worshipped Lord Shiva. When Shani Dev was born, his gaze fell upon Surya Dev, causing the Sun’s radiance to diminish slightly. This angered Surya Dev, and he initially refused to accept Shani Dev. However, later, seeing Shani Dev’s penance, strength, and sense of justice, all the gods honored and respected him.

Shani Dev is considered a great devotee of Lord Shiva. Through intense penance, he pleased Lord Shiva, who granted him a special place among the Navagrahas (nine planetary deities) and gave him the authority to deliver justice in the world. Shani Dev’s vehicle is considered to be the crow, and his color is described as black, symbolizing seriousness, justice, and karmic consequences. Saturday is dedicated to Shani Dev. On this day, people worship him, offer charity, and take vows to perform righteous deeds.
