The Story and Spiritual Significance of Surya Dev

Surya Dev is worshipped as the visible deity of light, life-force, health, courage, discipline, and spiritual clarity.

The Story of Surya Dev

Surya Dev is regarded in Hinduism as the deity of light, energy, life, and power. He is a directly visible deity and is therefore called the “Visible God” or “Pratyaksha Dev.” Life on Earth is impossible without the Sun. He provides light, warmth, and energy to the world. In the Vedas and Puranas, Surya Dev is given immense importance and is also considered the king of the Navagrahas (nine planetary deities).
According to the Puranas, Surya Dev is the son of Sage Kashyapa and Goddess Aditi. His radiance was so immense and divine that even the gods were influenced by his brilliance. Surya Dev travels across the sky in a chariot drawn by seven horses, with Aruna as his charioteer. The seven horses are believed to symbolize seven colors, seven days, and seven forms of energy.
Surya Dev was married to a goddess named Sanjna. However, his brilliance was so intense that Sanjna could not bear it. She left her shadow form, Chhaya, in service to Surya Dev and went away to perform penance. Shani Dev was born from Chhaya, while Yamaraj and Yamuna were born from Sanjna.
When Surya Dev learned that Sanjna had left him, he became deeply saddened. Later, he reduced some of his radiance so that she could remain with him. This story teaches that along with strength, balance and sensitivity are also necessary.
One famous story connected to Surya Dev is that of Karna, the great warrior of the Mahabharata. It is said that Kunti received a divine mantra from Sage Durvasa, through which she could invoke any deity. Out of curiosity, she invoked Surya Dev. He appeared before her, and from his divine radiance, Karna was born. Karna was born wearing divine armor and earrings, symbolizing Surya Dev’s celestial power.
Surya Dev also holds special importance in the Ramayana. During Lord Rama’s battle against Ravana, Sage Agastya taught him the “Aditya Hridaya Stotra.” Lord Rama worshipped Surya Dev and gained strength and victory over Ravana through his blessings.
Surya Dev is considered the symbol of wisdom, health, and positive energy. In ancient times, sages and ascetics offered water to the Sun daily and practiced Surya Namaskar. It is believed that worship of Surya Dev keeps the body healthy, the mind peaceful, and life full of energy.
Festivals such as Chhath Puja and Makar Sankranti are dedicated to Surya Dev. Especially during Chhath Puja, devotees offer water to the Sun and pray for the prosperity, happiness, and health of their families.
