Story of Shri Ram Ji

Lord Shri Ram is one of the most sacred and inspiring figures in Hinduism. Shri Ram is regarded as the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu. His life symbolizes truth, righteousness, ideals, sacrifice, and moral conduct. For this reason, he is known as “Maryada Purushottam” — the perfect embodiment of virtue and discipline.
Long ago, King Dasharatha ruled the city of Ayodhya. He was a great and just king, but he had no children. To obtain offspring, he performed the Putrakameshti Yajna. As a result of the sacred ritual, his three queens — Kaushalya, Kaikeyi, and Sumitra — were blessed with four sons. Shri Ram was born to Kaushalya, Bharat to Kaikeyi, and Lakshman and Shatrughna to Sumitra.
All four princes were brilliant, humble, and brave from childhood. Shri Ram was loved by everyone. He was truthful, compassionate, and devoted to righteousness. Lakshman deeply loved his elder brother Ram and always stayed by his side.
One day, Sage Vishwamitra came to Ayodhya and requested King Dasharatha to send Ram and Lakshman with him so they could protect his yajna from demons. Ram and Lakshman accompanied the sage and defeated Tadaka and other evil demons. This brought great joy to all the sages.
After this, they arrived in Mithila, where King Janaka had organized the swayamvara of his daughter Sita. The condition of the swayamvara was that whoever could lift and string Lord Shiva’s mighty bow would marry Sita. Many kings and warriors failed, but Shri Ram effortlessly lifted the bow, and while stringing it, the bow broke. After this, Ram and Sita were married.
As time passed, King Dasharatha decided to crown Ram as the king of Ayodhya. The entire kingdom was filled with celebration. However, Kaikeyi’s maid Manthara manipulated her, and Kaikeyi demanded two boons from Dasharatha. The first was that Bharat should become king, and the second was that Ram should be exiled to the forest for fourteen years.
King Dasharatha was deeply saddened, but he was bound by his promise. Shri Ram accepted his father’s command without protest. Mother Sita and Lakshman also accompanied him into exile. The people of Ayodhya wept, but Ram placed duty and righteousness above all else.
During the exile, Shri Ram protected many sages and destroyed demons. One day, Ravana’s sister Shurpanakha proposed marriage to Ram and Lakshman, but when rejected, she tried to harm Sita. Lakshman insulted her, and in anger she provoked Ravana.
Ravana deceitfully abducted Sita and took her to Lanka. When Ram learned this, he was deeply distressed and began searching for her. During this journey, he met Hanuman and Sugriva. Hanuman became the greatest devotee of Shri Ram.
Hanuman crossed the ocean to Lanka and discovered the whereabouts of Mother Sita. He warned Ravana and displayed his immense strength in Lanka. Afterward, Shri Ram built the Ram Setu across the ocean with the help of the Vanara army and attacked Lanka.
A fierce war took place in Lanka. Many powerful warriors of Ravana were defeated. Eventually, Shri Ram killed Ravana and established the victory of righteousness over evil. After this, Mother Sita was freed.
When the fourteen years of exile ended, Shri Ram, Sita, and Lakshman returned to Ayodhya. The people of Ayodhya welcomed them by lighting lamps. This event is commemorated through the festival of Diwali.
